INHOFE SEEKS PROTECTION FOR VETERAN PILOTS

Wednesday, April 30, 2003

WASHINGTON---U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today introduced a bill that would increase the mandatory retirement age for airline pilots.

“In light of the heavy burdens that have fallen on our airlines in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, it is important to protect our most experienced pilots who are in danger of losing their jobs due to the current mandatory retirement age of 60,” Inhofe said. “This bill will give those pilots the opportunity to continue to fly.”

The Age 65 Act (S.959) would abolish the Federal Aviation Administration’s Age 60 Rule and replace it with a rational plan that raises the retirement age to 63 immediately and then incrementally increases the age limit to 65. The United States is one of only two countries in the Joint Aviation Authorities that requires their commercial pilots to retire at the age of 60.

“Due to thorough physical and mental evaluations in place for all pilots we know that they meet the highest qualifications and standards,” Inhofe said. “Americans are living longer and healthier lives and we must take this into consideration when examining mandatory retirement laws.”

Sens. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), Conrad Burns (R-Mont.), Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.), and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) are the co-sponsors of this bill.

the negotiated rate is plus tax. I am putting this out early to get an idea on demand, so call the hotel and let them know. Rooms are very tight in Washington this week.
